Environmental Engineering Specialist (Hazardous Waste Management)

About the role

This position offers a unique opportunity to lead technical aspects of hazardous waste management projects in Central Asia, focusing on DDT and POPs remediation. Based in Bishkek with frequent travel to remediation sites, you will provide authoritative advice to ensure effective and compliant remediation efforts.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical advice and oversee remediation planning for DDT and POPs sites in Kyrgyzstan.
• Review and revise terms of reference, procurement documents, and design deliverables to ensure compliance with national legislation and international best practices.
• Support procurement processes, evaluate bids, and ensure quality assurance during delivery of goods and services.
• Coordinate with national authorities and contractors on HSE requirements, permits, and containment design.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or related field with at least 7 years experience, or Master’s degree with at least 5 years experience.
• Minimum five years professional experience in hazardous waste management, site remediation, or industrial HSE supervision, including development and oversight of remediation plans.
• Experience working with national institutions, NGOs, and international donors in Central Asia.

Required skills

• Hazardous waste management and site remediation expertise.
• Knowledge of ADR regulations and European Waste Catalog classification.
• Experience with environmental monitoring, HSE management, and preparation of export permits for transboundary waste movement.
• Procurement support and technical evaluation of tender proposals.
