Knowledge Engineer – AI/ML Workflow & Ontology Specialist

About the role

The Knowledge Engineer is embedded within a USAFRICOM Directorate to support the CDAO mission of digital modernization and AI/ML adoption across the AFRICOM enterprise. The role focuses on documenting, digitizing, and optimizing command workflows, designing semantic ontologies, and configuring Microsoft 365/DEOS tools to improve data accessibility and operational efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Map, baseline, and digitize existing command workflows; identify bottlenecks and transition manual processes into automated digital workflows using Agile practices.
• Design, maintain, and document minimum‑viable ontologies in OWL, RDF, or SKOS formats, ensuring compliance with metadata standards for integration into MSS and WDP.
• Train Knowledge Managers and functional users on metadata practices, modern collaboration platforms (Microsoft 365, Databricks, Palantir) and promote data literacy across directorates.
• Review technical work packages, evaluate scope and dataflow, and ensure delivery of Minimum Viable Product increments aligned with stakeholder needs.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (mandatory) and 10+ years of experience in knowledge management, process engineering, or related fields.
• Proven experience leading cross‑functional teams in DoD or intelligence‑community environments and hands‑on Microsoft 365 configuration (SharePoint admin, Power Automate, Teams governance).
• U.S. citizenship, eligible for SOFA status, and a TS/SCI clearance.
• Experience within U.S. military headquarters or Joint Staff directorates, with ability to lead change among senior stakeholders.
